The Dinokeng Big 5 game reserve in Gauteng is a place far removed from the hustle and bustle of Africa’s greatest business mecca. Here you’ll find rolling landscapes, endless plains; the serenity of the bush and the excitement of its wild. It’s in this magical space that you’ll find Kevin Richardson – better known as the Lion Whisperer – and his wife Mandy at work in their second home. Welcome to Rra Ditau, a luxury mobile tented camp on the Welgedacht farm in Dinokeng. Rra Ditau is Tswana for ‘father of lions’ – a name bestowed on Kevin by a guide in the Okavango Delta. Tau is also a Sepedi word, and it’s the name of Kevin’s oldest lion friend – a friend that launched his career with these kings of the African bush.
JLocated just one hour from OR Tambo International airport, this intimate glam camp, nestles quietly among beautiful acacia trees. Featuring 5 beautifully appointed tents that merge seamlessly into the tranquil landscape, this is a setting guaranteed to help you kick back, relax and unwind. While all that’s between you and the bush is canvas, luxury is the order of the day and no amenity has been overlooked. Tents feature en-suite bathrooms and a private patio from which to enjoy the incredible views and the even more incredible creatures that live there.
From the moment you arrive at Rra Ditau, life takes on a different rhythm as the outside world melts away. Here you’ll enjoy an intimate safari experience in a calming environment. Wake to birdsong and enjoy a sumptuous bush breakfast in our central dining area.
Then, track the abundant wildlife on the reserve in one of our open safari vehicles or experience the Kevin Richardson wildlife sanctuary where amongst others, you’ll meet lions Gabby and Bobcat, the beautiful Vayetse and our curious hyena, Gina. If you’re lucky, you could even take part in one of Kevin’s enrichment walks.
Back in camp, pop into the curio shop, where you’ll find exquisitely sourced gifts to take home as a memento of your visit. Then after the excitement of the day, sip on a sundowner in front of a traditional African bush fire, with the roar of lions, hum of cicadas and haunting call of nightjars there to keep you company. Later, indulge in tasty traditional South African and continental cuisine before ending the evening under a spectacular canopy of stars. Around the warm glow of the coals, share your experiences, listen to rangers’ tales and feel very simply that here, in this special place in Africa, life truly is good.
